We have started our self manager program in Room 6. I had all students fill out an application so that they could self reflect on their behavior, as well as get feedback from me on where I see their behavior. I met with each student and reviewed the areas that they could work on and encouraged them to work towards reapplying in one month if they did not meet the expectations this month. If students have an almost always in the first 10 categories, then they can begin gathering signatures
at their own pace. If the application is lost, it is up to the classroom teacher whether to replace the application, to start the process again, or wait until the next opportunity.
Once all signatures are gathered:
~ The student returns the completed application to the classroom teacher and the teacher then presents the child with a Self Manager badge. This badge represents excellence. A child with a self manager badge is given privileges (like going to recess first, going to lunch first, working in the hallway with a friend on a nice day, extra recess once a month, and other privileges) and expected to behave respectfully, safely and responsibly at all times.
Removal of the Self Manager badge:
Referral:
~ If the child gets a major or minor referral that is officially reported and recorded with school administration, the student’s badge, and self manager privileges, will be revoked.
~ After 1 month without the badge, the child may receive a new self manager application at the teacher’s discretion.
Three Offenses:
~ If a child gets a total of three teacher reminders from any certified or classified employee, the self manager badge will be put on a time out. For example, the classroom teacher gives the child a reminder for incomplete homework. Then, the child receives a reminder from the playground supervisor to go down the slide feet first. The music teacher sees the self manager running in the hallway and gives another reminder. All these reminders will be reported and tracked by the classroom teacher. Once the student gets three reminders the badge will go on time out for two weeks. ~At the end of the “time out”, the badge will be returned to the student and all self manager privileges and responsibilities will begin.
