Here we are working hard in our first full week of school! We are still trying to establish our routines, which is very important for any classroom...but even more important when there are 31 students! This week we have started our regular Houghton Mifflin Reading curriculum and are doing lots of review of reading strategies and phonics concepts. Next week we will start small group reading. We have also started our regular math routines which involves a math lesson and daily math fluency work. We work on writing during our writing block almost every day...right now we have been talking about taking an event and zooming in on the details. Each Monday we do Weekend News. It is helpful if you are able to discuss the weekend with your child and have them think of something that they could focus their writing on. It doesn't have to be a big event...something as simple as breakfast time. Example:
"On Saturday I woke up and my dad was making breakfast. We ate french toast. I put whipped cream on mine. It was so yummy!"
My criteria at this point for writing is an introduction sentence, at least 2 details and a conclusion that states how you felt about the event.
