Our class took second place in the box top contest and won a $25 gift certificate! We enjoyed a fun outdoor party today with watermelon, chips, lemonade, bubbles, chalk, frisbees, hula hoops and jump ropes. And we practiced some dance moves to Kid Bop! Thanks to Miss Julia for helping put it together! Here are few pictures...

Keep sending in BOXTOPS! This is our last week and we are in second place…only a couple hundred box tops behind. We are working toward a $50 gift certificate for a classroom celebration!
Check out the pictures of our science adventures on my website…mealworms and caterpillars…what fun! We have been learning how to take care of living creatures as well as observing the changes that our insects are making as they go through their life cycle. Almost all of our insects are in pupa stage now…and we are anxiously waiting for the final stage! We are having our last Box Top contest!!! The top three class get VISA gift cards !!!--1st place $50, 2nd and 3rd $25 each. This could be used for a classroom end of the year party or supplies for our classroom (like white board markers!) So far we have earned $1278.70 for our school and it has been great contributing in such a great way!! Those little boxtops/labels really do add up!!
Carnival is coming soon! Mark your calendars for May 15th. We need classroom volunteers to run games and help setup. We also will be making a basket for the raffle. Our basket theme is Family Movie/Game night. Students will get Bucks to spend at the carnival store when they bring items for the basket. Snacks, movies, snuggly blankets, family games, etc. would be great!!! Thank you! I can’t believe it’s May already! We are deep in many projects and I am really so excited about all the things that the students are doing…we have almost completed our electronic books of the animal reports that students wrote. They have created pages, dropped in pictures, cited sources, created a bibliography and done a voice recording on each page. Your children are great writers! They have started their last writing project, which is an opinion piece. In two days they have learned how to state and support their opinions in their writing. They are getting ready (finally) to take the math test on addition and subtraction with regrouping! We have kids that have already met their Reading Counts goals and some that are over 100 points! Lots of excitement in our classroom these days;) We will be doing our second round of self manager applications on Friday. I have some students who have really worked hard on improving their behavior in our three major areas of Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible. If your child has met the goals, they will bring home a signature sheet next week for you to sign. We are moving along with our animal reports. All students are creating an electronic report. They have been using our iPads and keyboards to type the pages to their books. We will be working on finding photos to incorporate as well. Students will also learn how to make bibliographies and give photo credits. I am so impressed with the students and how well they are learning to use technology to create a product! (not just play a game:)
In science, we have moved from animals and habitats into plants. We are learning about how plants grow, what is inside seeds, and how seeds are dispersed. We will even get a chance to work in our own Walterville Garden! We have around 12 self managers at this point! It has been a positive process with a few reminders about how to keep the badge (manage personal property, time, materials, self, etc.) I am also seeing an effort from many students who would like to earn their badge next time! Thank you for encouraging and supporting your child at home. We have started our self manager program in Room 6. I had all students fill out an application so that they could self reflect on their behavior, as well as get feedback from me on where I see their behavior. I met with each student and reviewed the areas that they could work on and encouraged them to work towards reapplying in one month if they did not meet the expectations this month. If students have an almost always in the first 10 categories, then they can begin gathering signatures
at their own pace. If the application is lost, it is up to the classroom teacher whether to replace the application, to start the process again, or wait until the next opportunity. Once all signatures are gathered: ~ The student returns the completed application to the classroom teacher and the teacher then presents the child with a Self Manager badge. This badge represents excellence. A child with a self manager badge is given privileges (like going to recess first, going to lunch first, working in the hallway with a friend on a nice day, extra recess once a month, and other privileges) and expected to behave respectfully, safely and responsibly at all times. Removal of the Self Manager badge: Referral: ~ If the child gets a major or minor referral that is officially reported and recorded with school administration, the student’s badge, and self manager privileges, will be revoked. ~ After 1 month without the badge, the child may receive a new self manager application at the teacher’s discretion. Three Offenses: ~ If a child gets a total of three teacher reminders from any certified or classified employee, the self manager badge will be put on a time out. For example, the classroom teacher gives the child a reminder for incomplete homework. Then, the child receives a reminder from the playground supervisor to go down the slide feet first. The music teacher sees the self manager running in the hallway and gives another reminder. All these reminders will be reported and tracked by the classroom teacher. Once the student gets three reminders the badge will go on time out for two weeks. ~At the end of the “time out”, the badge will be returned to the student and all self manager privileges and responsibilities will begin. Homework is due on Friday this week. Please be sure that all parts are done. Several kids have been missing their reading and vocabulary work each week. I will be introducing a self manager program in my classroom this week. Children will be encouraged to self evaluate and apply for self manager status. Other teachers and support staff will also be part of evaluation process, as well as myself. Students who consistently exhibit safe, respectful and responsible behaviors in all school settings will be considered for self manager privileges. These would include, going to lunch or recess first, sitting in hallway to do projects, special celebrations (extra recess, etc. once or twice a month). These students will not have to stay in from recess or practice hallway or recess lineup or any other behaviors when the whole class has to do those things based on behaviors. Other details will come as we unroll this program in our classroom over the next couple of weeks! Correction!!!
We have a music program on the 19th of March! Please have your child at school by 6:15 that evening. The kids have been working hard with Mrs. B on the program based on the book Swimmy. Many students are forgetting to return their blue cards on Tuesday. Students need to share their behavior cards with parents and then have them signed and returned so they can get their WOW bucks! Please look for that card and help your child remember to return so they can earn their reward. We are working on tumbling in PE. Please be sure that girls are dressed in appropriate clothing. We do take shoes off for this, so slip on shoes are fine next week (and easier)! There will be no homework over spring vacation. All homework folders are due by next Friday. I will probably send a small amount of homework on the Monday after spring vacation so you can expect to see the folder then. Have a great spring break! Thank you for supporting our “Love Your School” fundraiser! We made enough money to have a visit from Zany Zoo for the whole school:)
We have been working on our animal research projects during reading time. The kids are really excited and working hard at finding information on the internet, using our class set of iPads. We will finish our information gathering this week and begin using the eBook program to create an electronic report on our animal. We have a music program on the 16th of March!
